Genesis has spent the last few years quietly perfecting the art of sleek electric saloons and polished SUVs – finding a loyal audience in both the US and its home market of South Korea. So naturally, its latest move to unveil a 1,100hp V8-powered off-road monster and unleash it into one of the harshest deserts on Earth is a little deranged.
Meet the Genesis X Skorpio Concept — a blacked-out, arachnid-inspired off-road machine designed to tear across the Rub’ al Khali, also known as the Empty Quarter. You know, the world’s largest continuous sand desert and one of the world’s hottest and most inhospitable regions.
Built around a tubular frame with a full roll cage to ups which to mount racing hardware, the X Skorpio is the brand’s first proper foray into extreme off-road territory. And instead of batteries and electric motors, it’s powered by a high-performance V8 producing 1,115 PS (around 1,100hp) and a colossal 850 lb-ft of torque. There’s no replacement for displacement.
The design takes inspiration from a black scorpion, which explains the low, wide stance and segmented body panels. Those armour-like exterior sections aren’t just for show either — they’re designed to be easily repaired in extreme conditions, because Genesis knows this thing is likely to meet a rock at some point.
Massive 40-inch off-road tyres sit on 18-inch beadlock wheels, while Brembo Motorsport brakes handle stopping duties. There’s huge ground clearance, aggressive approach and departure angles, and a suspension setup designed to survive high-speed dune jumps rather than polite gravel driveways.
Inside, it’s a far cry from stripped-out desert racers. Genesis has applied its luxury know-how to the cockpit, creating something that feels more like a high-end rally command centre than a punishment chamber. The instrument cluster is mounted directly on the steering wheel, keeping key info in your the driver’s of sight, while a sliding display can shift between driver-focused and co-driver navigation modes. Think Dakar-spec, but with suede, leather and laser-cut detailing.
Despite the insanity, safety hasn’t been ignored. There’s a four-point harness, integrated roll cage and a body constructed from fibreglass, carbon fibre and Kevlar to keep weight down while protecting those onboard
Genesis recently showed the X Skorpio running in real-world desert conditions alongside other rugged concepts, including the GV60, GV70 and GV80 Desert Edition models — but make no mistake, this V8-powered lunatic stole the show.
But hold your horses, Genesis isn’t committing to hardcore off-road racing just yet, as the brand says the concept “reflects the brand’s deep understanding of evolving customer lifestyles”.
Alongside the recently-announced GMR-001, it looks like Genesis is done playing it safe with electric SUVs and wants to start making a (very loud) statement.
