Honda has a long and established relationship with Chinese motorcycle manufacturer Sundiro, to the point that it allows the brand to essentially licence its badging for a raft of cool and affordable machines that will never see the light of day in any other markets.

A shame, because not only does it experiment with a multitude of really smart looking electric motorcycles, including the Cub e, the Dax e and the cafe racer-inspired E-VO, it also delivers the goods in the petrol-powered Square X125, which might just be one of the most radical off-road scooters we’ve laid eyes on.

It is a boxy, utilitarian little runaround that is based on fairly standard scooter chassis and ultra-efficient 125cc engine. There’s ABS braking at the front and rear, as well as clever stop/start system that prevents the bike from idling at a standstill, savaging fuel and cutting CO2 emissions.

But things get more interesting when you start poking around the bodywork, which features all manner of c argo racks, add-on panniers and a very cool flip-up seat, which doubles-up as a backrest for solo rides, or folds flat for when you need to carry a pillion passenger.

It’s the Swiss Army knife of the low capacity motorcycle world, complete with high-rise off-road bars, all-terrain tyres and numerous detachable metal brackets for hanging stuff from. There’s even a pet box for transporting a furry friend, while one of the side panniers opens up, creating a neat picnic table.

Don’t expect much in the way of face-melting performance here, as the diminutive 125cc engine produces just 9.5hp at 7,750 rpm, with a top speed of around 55mph manageable. But hey, 55mph through the woods will feel plenty fast enough and you can ride easy knowing that it achieves 138mpg, with the 1.5-gallon tank delivering around 207 miles between fill-ups.

And the best bit? If you roughly convert the asking price, it equates to around £1,350/$1,800. Of course, it’s highly likely that it will never go on sale here, but we can dream.
